Answering a Question on Ethics

Questions in the Ethics topic tend to be subjective, with no single correct answer. There can be multiple ways to answer a particular question, and all of them might be right. Aspirants are often confused about how to answer ethics questions, even though they are clear about the syllabus. The case studies are based on ethical dilemmas and logical reasoning, and the purpose of these case studies is to prepare aspirants for real-time field experiences.

How to answer a question on ethics?

When answering a case study on ethics, aspirants should have a concrete framework ready. This will give a sense of flow, coherence, and structure to the case study. It is helpful to use the following steps to arrive at the final answer:

  1. Briefly write the summary of the entire case study in a line or two and capture the entire case study. Drawings are also helpful when there is a crunch of time during exam.
  2. Before attempting the question, list down the set of people (stakeholders) who would be directly and indirectly affected in the case.
  3. In ethical dilemmas sort of questions, mention the conflicting values you face in your judgment.
  4. Write 3-4 choices you have in the given scenario, along with the pros and cons of choosing each alternative.
  5. Choose your options carefully by balancing all options and taking a middle path approach. Try to choose the best option in any given situation, which may not be the most creative but the most practical.

By following this framework, aspirants can ensure that their answers are well-structured and coherent.
